How are those winter power bills looking? We are all aware of the huge impact our coldest winter of the decade has had. Nowhere has it been felt more keenly than in the wallet. Huge electricity and gas price increases over the last few years have sneaked up quietly. A line maintenance increase here, a levy there, a rate increase due to low lake levels. We have taken it all lying down. But what an impact it has had when we need to use it! Meridian, our largest generator, has increased its Christchurch residential electricity charges by a massive 42% over the last 7 years! Unbelievable to think this has sneaked up on us.
